Mike Bouchet is an American artist who currently lives and works in Germany. Bouchet is a multi-media artist without a defined practice, working in painting, sculpture, installations, and films as well as performance, living sculptures and dedicated projects whether it be a commune, a travel agency, tire manufacturing, designing jeans or producing his own diet cola.He culls material from the everyday; the urban landscape; human consumption. His interests, no matter how varied, often claim exactly equal cultural value. Consumerism is regularly at the core of his practice, in which he may layer images and references from popular culture to create a nuanced reading informed by the current state of Western capitalism.
The smashed bust of Nicole Kidman is created through a process of making, destroying and then remaking. In so doing Bouchet highlights the brittle and damaging ideals of modern celebrity and female beauty, whilst simultaneously conjuring up the ancient art of Kintsugi, the Japanese tradition of repairing whilst embracing the flawed or imperfect; highlighting the cracks and repairs as simply an event in the life of an object rather than allowing its service to end at the time of its damage or breakage.
Bouchet is the recipient of the 1822 Kunstpreis der Stadt Frankfurt in 2014.
