Celia Hempton

Celia Hempton is an English artist currently living and working in London. Through her practice Hempton regularly explores themes of performativity, voyeurism and human interaction. The artist is celebrated for her series Chat Random where the people she encountered in webcam chatrooms became her subjects.
Her work regularly explores the idea of the modern day nude as well as the relationship between photography and painting; the idea of the nude being at the intersection of surveillance and human sexuality is present in many of her works. The artist has also created a series of self portrait nude paintings, exploring the way she sees herself, and how she believes others may see her.
Hempton is the recipient of the 2014 Civitella Ranieri Foundation residency, Umbria, Italy; 2008-10 Sainsbury Scholarship in Painting; The British School at Rome, Italy 2007; Neville Burston Memorial Award, Royal College of Art, London, UK.
